African Animals by Robert Fuller - A selection of wildlife art paintings and bronze sculptures
I hope you enjoy looking through my collection of paintings of African Lions, Leopards, Giraffes, Zebras, Hippos and Elephants. Each year, I travel either to Africa or India to photograph and study big cats in their natural environment so that I can capture the characteristics of each of the big cats in my paintings. Recent trips to Africa have included, the Masai Mara, Kenya; the Serengeti, Tanzania; Etosha National Park, Namibia; the Kruger National Park South Africa; Mana Pools in Zimbabwe; Moremi, Chobe & Okavango Delta in Botswana.
All the pictures featured below are limited edition prints, signed and numbered by Robert Fuller. The limited edition prints are of the highest quality, printed on thick 300gsm art card using light fast inks. All the prints below are available to purchase by clicking on the links beside each image.

African Elephant Loxodonta africana
The African Elephant is the largest living land mammal, with bulls weighing up to 7 tons and measuring up to 4 metres in height and 7 metres in length.
Elephants feed mainly on grass, bark, roots, fruit and soil (for it's mineral content), consuming 7% of its body weight in vegetation each day. To do this most of their time - around 18hrs per day - is spent feeding & drinking up to 55 gallons of water. The trunk itself can hold up to 2.5 gallons, but whilst it weights up to 400 pounds it is so dexterous it can pick up a grain of rice.
Both males & females grow large tusks, which are elongated teeth. They appear aged 2 and continue growing throughout the animal's life time. The elephant's tusk is a versatile tool used for fighting, pushing, lifting and digging. Mild-tempered bull elephants tend to have the largest tusks, because unlike some others they don't use them so much in combat & tree ramming!
Elephants live in complex social groups of up to 10 animals consisting of related female elephants and their offspring. The group is lead by the oldest and largest cow, known as the matriarch. When young males reach puberty they leave the family unit or are driven out from it. |

Giraffe Giraffa camelopardalis
It's Greek name means the camel leopard and this seems appropriate for the Giraffe, the tallest of all our living mammals. There are nine recognised sub-species of Giraffe across the African continent, all distinguished by the patterning & colouration of their coat.
All giraffes live in either open savannah grasslands or in wooded grasslands, browsing selectivally on the leaves of the uppermost branches of Acacias, which are out of reach of all other grazers. They use their lips to pull twigs into their mouths and their long tongue to curl round and strip them of leaves.
Giraffes give birth to their young standing up, and so the young baby drops up to 6ft on to the floor at birth. Calves weigh between 50-70kg at birth and stand up to 2m tall. Within the hour, new born giraffes can walk and they can usually run within 24 hours.
Giraffes live in loose herds of 10-20 indivduals of all sexes and ages. Males maintain their hierachy by 'necking' where males use their long necks to hit each other. Many other grazers such as zebras use giraffes as a watch tower for predators. |

Hippopotamus Hippopotamus amphibius
Meaning 'river horse' in Greek, a Hippopotamus can live up to 45 years old in the wild, inhabiting rivers and lakes, leaving only at night to graze in short grasslands. Female hippos with offspring live in groups of 10-15, but larger groups of up to 150 have been seen. Adult male hippos are either solitary or form small bachelor groups. Solitary males are territorial and their territories often include a group of female hippos & their offspring. They maintain their territories for between 4-8 years, holding the exclusive breeding rights to the resident females.
Hippos are excellent swimmers, but prefer to amble along shallow slow moving or stagnant water. Their backs are host to many animals such as storks & cattle egrets which use the hippos as fishing perches. |

African Lion Panthera Leo
African Lions live largely in Eastern & Southern Africa. Prides of lions maintain and fiercely defend home ranges of up to 160 square miles and nomadic male lions can range an area up to 1600 square miles.
The primary habitat of the lion is grassy plains, savannah and open woodland. Males measure up to 8.3 feet in length, with the tail adding an extra 3-3.5 feet and 4 feet high at the shoulder.
Both males & females lions are tan in colour effectively camouflaging them in their savannah environment. Male lions have a light to dark brown mane which helps protect the lion's neck during fighting and also making him appear larger to competitors.
Lions live between 12-18 years, preying mainly on wilderbeest, zebra, giraffe, buffalo & gazelles. In certain areas, lions are also renowned for hunting elephant, rhinoceros or hippos. A single lion needs to kill between 10 & 20 large animals per year to sustain it. Most lion hunts fail, with approximately only 1 in 5 succeeding.
Lions spend much of their time resting together in their pride - often up to 20 hours per day. During this time, the pride socialises & reinforces its bonds as a group, rubbing heads together & playing. However, on frequent occasions their long resting times can be frustrating for me as I try to photograph them! One time, after a large pride had killed and eaten a buffalo at Londolozi, the lions barely moved in 3 days! A lion pride frequently has up to 20 or more individuals, typically 2 males, several females and their offspring. The adult females are usually related to each other and are group members for life. Males, by contrast, must fight off competing males for leadership of the pride, staying in the pride only as long as he can defend their groups from a takeover. Life in a group allows lions to hunt co-operatively for food. Generally lions hunt by stalking, they are not built for endurance running. Whilst, lions normally walk at around 2.4miles per hour, they can run at 29-35 miles per hour and leap up to 36 feet!

Leopard Panthera Pardus
The Leopard is most easily recognised by its rosette patterned coat and extremely long tail. Sizes of Leopard vary according to location and subspecies, with the largest Leopards growing to 5ft in length plus 3ft of tail.
The leopard is a versatile hunter and mainly nocturnal. Prey is dependent on its environment, and will range from large herbivores such as young eland, wilderbeest, impala and gazelle to smaller mammals such as hares and rock hyrax.
The leopard, inspite of being a very competent predator, must be alert to the threat of other carnvivores such as lions and hyeanas. Because of this, Leopards commonly carry their prey up trees and away from the threat of scavengers demonstrating as they do their strength, agility and endurance. Leopards are able to carry prey often weighing three times it's body weight into the tree tops, which really is a sight to behold.
The Leopard is the most widespread of cats, but extremely elusive and difficult to spot as they lounge in the upper most branches of trees! |

Plains Zebra Equus burchelli
Zebras belong to the horse family. Living throughout eastern and southern Africa, Zebras are social animals and share their range with wildebeest, gazelles, giraffe, oryx and antelope. Zebras mainly inhabit grassy plains. But, depending on the availability of food, zebras can either be sedentary for example in the Ngorogoro Crater or migratory in seasonally dry areas such as the Masai Mara-Serengeti eco-system.
Plains Zebra are dependent on water supply and never wander far from waterholes. Indeed, it is the responsibility of the dominant male to ensure that water is never too distant as he guides the group of up to 20 animals from grazing land to grazing land.
The mesmerising black and white stripes of their coats are unique to each zebra and numerous theories abound on why their coat is so distinctive. Some propose a cooling benefit, others suggest that it is to confuse predators - where does one start and the other end! |

Dung Beetle Scarabaeinae Coprinae
Whilst every safari-goer likes to look for the 'big five' - one of the 'small five' is one of the most fascinating. It's the dung beetle, which spends its time hard and work rolling it's ball of dung across the sand. Using his forelegs and the front of his head the beetle collects bits of dung which it compresses into a ball.
Head down, legs aloft he travels backwards pushing its dung ball with its legs. The beetle then buries in in the sand, whereupon it is inspected by the female. She takes over at this point patting and kneading it until it is just so. She then forms a hollow in the ball into which she lays an egg. She re-seals the ball and then the chamber into which it was buried and departs.
On hatching, the larva munches away on the dung for several weeks until it is fully grown and then breaks out of the ball & then out of the chamber to start its own 3 year long life.
This unusual form of breeding is a vital element of the African eco-system, dispersing dung around the African bush and plains to the benefit of plants and animals alike.
