Big Cats by Robert Fuller - A selection of wildlife art paintings available to buy today from our on-line store

I hope you enjoy looking through my collection of paintings of African Lions, Leopards and Bengal Tigers. Each year, I travel either to Africa or India to photograph and study big cats in their natural environment so that I can capture the characteristics of each of the big cats in my paintings. Recent trips to Africa have included, the Masai Mara, Kenya; the Serengeti, Tanzania; Etosha National Park, Namibia; the Kruger National Park South Africa; Mana Pools in Zimbabwe; Moremi, Chobe & Okavango Delta in Botswana; Bandhavgarh, Ranthambhore and Kanha National Parks in India. Kind Regards Robert E Fuller

African Lion Panthera Leo

African Lions live largely in Eastern & Southern Africa. Prides of lions maintain and fiercely defend home ranges of up to 160 square miles and nomadic male lions can range an area up to 1600 square miles.

The primary habitat of the lion is grassy plains, savannah and open woodland. Males measure up to 8.3 feet in length, with the tail adding an extra 3-3.5 feet and 4 feet high at the shoulder.

Both males & females lions are tan in colour effectively camouflaging them in their savannah environment. Male lions have a light to dark brown mane which helps protect the lion's neck during fighting and also making him appear larger to competitors.

Lions live between 12-18 years, preying mainly on wilderbeest, zebra, giraffe, buffalo & gazelles. In certain areas, lions are also renowned for hunting elephant, rhinoceros or hippos. A single lion needs to kill between 10 & 20 large animals per year to sustain it. Most lion hunts fail, with approximately only 1 in 5 succeeding.

Lions spend much of their time resting together in their pride - often up to 20 hours per day. During this time, the pride socialises & reinforces its bonds as a group, rubbing heads together & playing. However, on frequent occasions their long resting times can be frustrating for me as I try to photograph them! One time, after a large pride had killed and eaten a buffalo at Londolozi, the lions barely moved in 3 days! A lion pride frequently has up to 20 or more individuals, typically 2 males, several females and their offspring. The adult females are usually related to each other and are group members for life. Males, by contrast, must fight off competing males for leadership of the pride, staying in the pride only as long as he can defend their groups from a takeover. Life in a group allows lions to hunt co-operatively for food. Generally lions hunt by stalking, they are not built for endurance running. Whilst, lions normally walk at around 2.4miles per hour, they can run at 29-35 miles per hour and leap up to 36 feet!

Leopard Panthera Pardus

The Leopard is most easily recognised by its rosette patterned coat and extremely long tail. Sizes of Leopard vary according to location and subspecies, with the largest Leopards growing to 5ft in length plus 3ft of tail.

The leopard is a versatile hunter and mainly nocturnal. Prey is dependent on its environment, and will range from large herbivores such as young eland, wilderbeest, impala and gazelle to smaller mammals such as hares and rock hyrax.

The leopard, inspite of being a very competent predator, must be alert to the threat of other carnvivores such as lions and hyeanas. Because of this, Leopards commonly carry their prey up trees and away from the threat of scavengers demonstrating as they do their strength, agility and endurance. Leopards are able to carry prey often weighing three times it's body weight into the tree tops, which really is a sight to behold.

The Leopard is the most widespread of cats, but extremely elusive and difficult to spot as they lounge in the upper most branches of trees!

Bengal Tiger Panthera tigris tigris

Tigers live in a variety of habitats ranging from tropical rainforests, mangrove swamps, grasslands and savannahs, evergreen forests rising to the snow line in mountainous areas. They prefer areas close to water with thick vegetation for cover. In the summer months, tigers spend much of their time in water to cool down. They are also excellent swimmers and can readily swim across rivers 3-5miles wide.

Tigers measure between 5-12 feet weighing between 143-670 pounds. Typically a tiger wil live up to 15 years of age in the wild - that is if the tiger does not meet with poachers during its lifetime. Whilst, the average person who had seen tigers in zoos would consider that the tiger's orange and black coat would be highly visible, we found that, in the dark shadows of the bamboo forest, it is barely perceptible. The coat is also unique, like the human finger print, no two tigers have the same pattern of stripes on their coats.

The tiger is the ultimate predator and will hunt most creatures, but it's main diet consists of medium sized deer and wild boar. Their hindlimbs are longer than its forelimbs enabling the tiger to jump long distances. The tiger's paws are equipped with long retractable claws which enable them to grab prey and drag it to the ground before delivering a killing bite with its powerful jaws and long canines. Tigers rely less on smell and more on keen eyesight & hearing to capture prey and prefers to hunt under the cover of dense foliage.

Tigers are mainly solitary animals which establish well guarded territories that will remain with that tiger until its death. This is possibly caused by the dense vegetation which tigers prefer to live in where scattered prey is scarece and scattered. There is very little overlap of territory between adults of the same sex. However, a male tiger's territory will overlap those of several females.
