Red Grouse Lagopus lagopus Exploding into chattering flight out of the moorland heather, a plump and handsome red grouse is an exhilarating sight. The Grouse shooting season opens on 'The Glorious Twelfth' in August. Stocks are maintained by managed breeding and land management. The Red Grouse with its 'qurrack-rack-rack' bark of an alarm call and the male's 'go-back, go-back' challenge to its rivals, is classified as a slightly different subspecies to the willow grouse of Europe, Asia & North America. Six to a dozen eggs are laid in a sparsely lined ground depression sheltered by heather or a tussock of grass. The eggs cream and heavily speckled, hatch after three to three and a half weeks. The chicks quickly leave the nest to feed and can fly in less than two weeks.

Red Legged Partridge Alectoris rufa

First introduced in 1673, it was only a century later that the red legged partridge really became established in the UK. Thousands of chicks were imported from France in 1790 and scores more imported in the 19th & 20th Centuries. Today the red-leg outnumbers our own native Grey Partridge in many places
When flushed, the red legged partridge tends to run rather than fly, but inspite of its colourful feathers, it manages to blend extremely well into its habitat of ploughed fields, heaths, downs, open countryside and coastal dunes.
The red legged partridge has the unusual habit of sometimes laying two clutches of eggs in different nests. One is incubated by the female the other by the male. Each clutch consists of up to 20 or more eggs.

Grey Partridge Perdix Perdix

One of the most popular game birds, Grey partridges are highly distinctive with their brown horseshoe mark on their breast, and orange/brown face. In flight their reddy-brown tail is noticeable. Shooting starts in early September when the birds are gathered together in large groups or coveys. By February, the surviving birds have paired off and the cock birds defend their territory against rivals. Courtship often takes the form of a running chase, the cock and hen taking turns to pursue each other. The nest is a hollow scrape in the ground in cover such as a hedge bottom or tall grass. Between 10-20 eggs are laid, olive-brown in colour, but partridges are prolific layerss and two or more birds will often lay eggs in one nest, so that clutches of 40 may occur. The partridges call is a grating 'karr-wick' repeated at intervals, when startled they leap into the are with a loud 'krikrikrik' repeated rapidly at first but slowing as the bird escapes from danger.

Pheasant Phasianus colchicus Though this colourful and handsome creature is Britain's most widespread game bird, it is not native. The pheasant's natural home is in Asia. It's eating qualities were appreciated by the English in the early Middle Ages, when the birds were first introduced. By the end of the 16th Century they were common, and in the from the following century birds from China with their white neck rings were being brought in. In modern times, the large scale rearing of captive pheasants for release into the wild has encouraged land owners to maintain woods and copses on their land. This has brought some benefit to other wildlife. For nesting, the pheasant favours almost any thick ground vegetation, though it prefers areas with trees. The nest, a shallow scrape in the ground usually contains a clutch of 7-15 eggs. The cock has several females in his 'harem' so a nest may often contain more than one clutch.

Red Deer Cervus elaphus
A large and impressive deer, adult male red deer are the heaviest of their kind. Their size and bulk is heavily influenced by the quality of feeding & climate. The adults have a coat of short hair that is red in summer and dark brown in winter. Stags grow antlers in spring or summer; initially they are covered in a fleshy layer of skin known as velvet. This layer is shed in Autumn, revealing bare antlers which are themselves shed in spring. Antlers increase in size and the number of points they bear each year until the red stag reaches 7-8 years old. 10 or 11 is usually the maximum number of points.

Roe Deer Capreolus capreolus
An elegant and attractive native species, the Roe deer has a reddish brown coat in summer which it sheds in Autumn to reveal a thick and dense grey and brown winter coat. Especially distinctive are its blackand white markings on its muzzle. The male roe deer develops short bark like antlers in late winter, early spring. The initial coating of velvet is shed in April and May & the antlers themselves are shed early in Winter. During the rutting season, females attract the attention of males with their rhythmic high-pitched cries. A male utters a rasping call in the latter stages of courtship. Roe deer seem to do best where there is a mosaic of woodland copses, arable farmland & grasslands.

Woodcock Scolopax rusticola
Though it is a wader, the woodcock has largely left open marshes and taken to damp woodland with open clearings and a good growth of bracken & bramble. Woodcocks need soft grown to feed, probing for earthworms & insects. Their territorial display flight called rodding is very distinctive. The male bird flies over its territory at dusk, covering a wide area on slow beating wings which belie its actual speed of flight. From time to time it utters two calls - a throaty 'og-og-og' and a 'chee-wick.' The woodcock's escape flight is very different. It moves very rapidly among the trees with deftly executed twists & turns.
