British Garden Birds by Robert Fuller - A selection of wildlife art paintings available to purchase from our on-line store

British Garden birds provide interest and pleasure to thousands of households across the country. Most people now feed the birds in the garden from bird tables and feeders, which sustains the garden bird population no end. It is suprising what little effort can do to attract birds into your garden, no matter how small the space may be. At my gallery and studio at Fotherdale Farm on the Yorkshire Wolds I have spent several years, planting shrubs, putting up nest boxes and digging out ponds with wildlife in mind. The bird life has really increased, with up to 150 goldfinches drinking at the stream I created each day during the summer months. Tree sparrows, which are in sharp decline across the UK, are thriving here and up to 150 pairs now live around our farm. This increases each year, and dare I say it, they are starting to get expensive to feed!! Robins, blue tits, long tailed tits and woodpeckers all make daily apperances. A woodland is planned to be planted in 2006 around the farmhouse and I'm hoping for some Bullfinches to make an appearance in the years to come. Fingers crossed. I hope you enjoy looking through the paintings I have produced, largely as a result of photographs taken in my garden at Fotherdale Farm. Kind Regards Robert Fuller

Blue Tit Parus Caeruleus

Chiefly a woodland bird, the blue tit is a regular visitor to the bird table, amusing on-lookers with its acrobatic behaviour and its bright blue and yellow feathers.

The blue tit eats a wide variety of food, and on the bird table particularly enjoy peanuts and fat bars. The blue tit is inquisitive and resourceful. In cold winter months, blue tits are renowned for their habit of pecking through milk bottle tops to the layer of cream below.

The blue tit has a tuneful song, consisting of three notes and followed by a rapid trill.

Blue Tits will breed wherever there are trees with holes into which they can build a nest filled with moss, dried grass, wool, feathers and down. Few birds more readily accept the shelter of a nest-box, which the blue tit will occupy year after year.

Bullfinch Pyrrhula purryhula

Undoubtedly one of Britain's prettiest garden birds, the bullfinch is unmistakable with its red underparts, white rump and black cap.

During the breeding season the bullfinch is largely seen in woodlands, whilst in winter the bullfinch feeds largely on seeds of herbaceous perennials and later on tree seeds. Come Spring time, Bullfinches have traditionally been the baine of many a fruit producer, as the buds of fruit trees become the mainpart of their diet, as they remove over 30 or more buds per minute!

Because of this, thousands of bullfinches were trapped in the 1950s and 1960s. By the 1970s with the population increase of their main predator the sparrowhawk, bullfinches became much scarcer.

Goldfinch Carduelis carduelis

A group of Goldfinches is called a 'charm', and it has been said that no better word can be used to describe the joy of watching these beautiful garden birds with their tinkling bell-like calls.

Feeding on teasels, thistles and dandelions, they balance delicately atop whilst picking out the seeds, before moving with their dancing flight to the next plant. In some areas, goldfinches are seen feeding off bird tables, particularly when niger seeds and sunflower seeds are on offer, however in my area in the Yorkshire Wolds of the 100-200 goldfinches that visit my garden stream each day to drink and bathe, only a handful seem confident enough to eat from the bird table.

Goldcrest Regulus Regulus

The smallest British bird, the goldcrest can be heard with its high-pitched song more readily than can be seen.

The Goldcrest is a fast mover and flits from tree to tree constantly in search of insects on the branches of conifers. During the breeding season the male displays his striking yellow crest to the female.

I photographed this pair below in larch in early summer, whilst they were still feeding their young.

Wren Troglodytes Troglodytes

The Wren is Britain's second smallest bird (the Goldcrest above is half a centimetre longer). What this little bird lacks in size it certainly makes up in character. With its distinctive cocked tail, the wren is constantly on the go, nosing about in every nook and cranny looking for insects and grubs. On the bird table, live meal worms are the food of choice, but they can also be partial to a small quantity of grated cheese.

The Wren is also the most widespread in the UK, and seems to thrive in all sorts of different habitats. It always brings a smile, when you are in a remote, inhospitable place and you can hear the Jenny Wren's call. Only last year, I was climbing over the pinnacles of Crib Goch on the Snowdon mountain range & heard Jenny Wren's piping tune!

In between February and July the Wren is in full voice, its shrill notes being heard morning noon and night! The male bird builds a number of nests, which the female inspects before choosing one.

The wren is frequently referred to as 'Jenny Wren,' this seems to have started from the poem, 'When Jenny Wren was Young' - although do let me know if you know of earlier references!

Long Tailed Tit Aegithalos caudatus

The Long Tailed Tit is a master builder, its nest being testimony to that. Intricately built of moss, feathers, lichen and then bound with cobwebs, it also is one of the softest nests to be found. The cobweb element is ingenious and allows the nest to expand with the growth of the young.

A very pretty in pink bird, it is readily identifiable by its long black tail and pipping voice as it flits in small groups along hedges and woodland edges.

I enjoyed watching the long tailed tits in my greenhouse one spring. Initially concerned that one had unintentionally trapped itself in, I let the pretty long tailed tit out, only to see it fly purposefully back through the window minutes later. What was it doing? A marvellous job of tidying up the cobwebs that had crisscrossed across the greenhouse over winter to use for its nest.

Nuthatch Sitta europaea

The presence of a Nuthatch is often discovered by its song. 'Chwit' or 'Chiririri' is loudly sung as the Nuthatch inspects a tree trunk in search of food. The nuhatch hops up and down trunks in search of hazel and beech nuts, acorns, seeds and insects. The Nuthatch measures 14cm lives in decidous woodland, large gardens or parkland.

The nuthatch was originally named 'nut-hack' because of its habit of hacking open nuts with its beak which it has fixed into the crevice or hole in a tree.

Robin Erithacus rubecula

It's tame and inquisitive nature have earned the Robin its place as Britain's best-loved garden bird. It even seems to enjoy gardening & is commonly heard to be there just at the edge of a gardener's fork as the soil is turned. Robins can also be tamed to eat meal worms directly out of your hand.

However, in my area on the top of the Yorkshire Wolds, away from towns, the robins are much more wary, even sometimes shy and retiring, and don't stay long on the bird table.

Highly territorial, the Robin patrols its territory and guards it fiercely, warbling as a reminder of its presence. It will not tolerate intrusion by any other males. I photographed the Robin in my garden in 2004, it had seen another Robin in the garden & was warbling louder and louder. It turned out it was it's own reflection it had seen in the wing mirror of my car, which it chased & pecked until totally bemused!

Any convenient hole or ledge -even an old teapot - may be chosen as a nesting place.

Great Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos major

The great spotted woodpecker, the most common of British woodpeckers, readily eats from bird tables. I have a pair that visits the table several times a day, and in the summer months the fledlings are brought to the table. (This is where I photographed the painting below). It favours peanuts and fat bars and can bully the other birds off the table. If a sparrowhawk flies over whilst the woodpecker is feeding at the table, it will turn motionless and rigid as if an extension to the bird table!

The woodpeckers characteristic drumming, often gives away their presence. Its a sign of marking their territory and is made by rapid blows of up to 20 per second, against a resonant bough of a tree.

The black and white plumage is accented by the splash of red on the rump, giving it a startling look. The male can be distinguished from the female by the red patch on the back of its head. The juveniles are recognisable by their red cap.

The Great Spotted Woodpecker is frequently mistaken for the Lesser Spotted. However, the Lesser Spotted is a tiny bird no larger than a house sparrow and seldom seen.

Yellow Hammer

'A little bit of butter and no cheese' is the verse commonly attributed to the Yellow Hammer's song. The yellow hammer, brings a splash of colour into grassy areas and fields with hedgerows. They feed mainly on the ground, but perch atop hedges & on telephone wires to deliver their song.

The nest, built exclusively by the female yellow hammer, is sited on the ground or in a thick hedge, but cleverly disguised by overhanging plants and undergrowth. It is a neat ball of moss and grass into which she lays three or four purplish-white eggs with bold scribbly markings on.
