| Otters have made a spectacular comeback in recent years. But they can still be elusive and difficult to study. My favourite place to see otters is on the Outer Hebridian islands, especially on Mull where they hunt mainly in the sea. |

| I will never tire of watching long tailed tits. This pair were busy nest building in February in the grounds of the NEC at Birmingham of all places. They were quite used to people passing by and I watched from a gorse bush a few feet away as they built their nest. |

| I travelled to Finland in 2008 to photograph European Brown Bears. Bearwatching happens at night, wehnt he bears come out of the forest into clearings to forage on berries and on other food. But, as they were only just south of the Arctic circle, it was light for much of the night. |

| In mid April I was in for a treat. The dominant sow appeared and paused to scratch. As I watched, a tiny black and white face appeared at the hole, then another one. The sow muttered low level contact calls to encourage her cubs out and a third cub appeared. I watched as she groomed their fur before she took them back down to the safety of the sett. |

| I photographed this badger in Cropton Forest . It had just emerged from the sett and as it came towards me the wind direction changed and the badger scented the air. I suspect it had smelt me and so I backed off. |

| I came across this handsome pair of barn owls in an old barn at Duggleby. I was checking barn owl boxes. I parked outside the barn, not wanting to go in incase I disturbed anything and made hissing sounds from my car. Suddenly, these two came out of the barn and perched on the barn door - I obviously do a good owl impression! |

I photographed these swans (see also below following two paintings) at Fairburn Ings nature reserve. I had been watching and photographing kingfishers all day. It was a cold January day with a lot of ice around and the kingfishers were hanging around areas with running water in between the lakes which made watching them a bit easier. The sun was setting and I thought it was getting too dark to photograph. So I headed off home and came across these beautiful swans on an ice free patch of water, which made equally appealing subjects. |

| This cheeky fox cub appeared by the roadside a mile and a half way from Fotherdale Farm. I had been up at 4am for three mornings in a row looking for foxes at Filey Dam. It seems I needn't have travelled so far! |

| This year has been great for hare watching around Fotherdale. In the spring and summer I would regularly have up to 13 hares in the field opposite my studio. It was great fun watching all their antics boxing and chasing each other in their courting rituals. |

| Gentoo penguins were Robert Fuller's main focus when he reached the Antarctic peninsula. This female gentoo had successfully reared two chicks and was beautifully silhouetted against the skyline. Robert waited for 2 1/2hr in freezing conditions to wait for this tender moment when the adult gentoo bent down to feed her chicks. |

| These two young cub otters were seen curled up beside each other fresh from a dip in the water. Cubs are often quite sociable unlike the adult otters, which outside of breeding times are solitary. Robert captures the uxoriously thick coat of these two young and their characteristic spiky guard hairs, which are flat and streamlined in water, are clearly visible as they dry out in the sun. |

| This impressive large painting of Zebras was inspired from a trip to Lake Nakuru in Kenya a few years back. Mother and foal often stand in protective and affectionate poses such as this and it is always interesting to see how the shapes and patterns of the zebras' stripes merge when they are set against each other. Robert particularly enjoys the challenge of painting large scale pictures such as this. Although difficult to see from the image above, the texture of fur on the original is fantastic and there is a great play of light across the two zebras which brings out the reddish tinge to their coats. |

| I travelled to Antarctica in 2007 and saw the largest penguin colony at St Andrew's Bay with over 1/2 million penguins. But these two were from the smallest colony we visited - just 18 birds - on Saunders Island, Falkland Islands. |
