The Robert Fuller Gallery
The Robert Fuller Gallery is dedicated exclusively to paintings by the leading wildlife artist Robert E Fuller.
Nestled in a fold of the Yorkshire Wolds, just a short drive from York and from the North Yorkshire market town of Malton, it is set in the very heart of the English countryside and is ideally located to attract visitors to this part of the country.
Since it opened with the help of a rural enterprise grant in 2001, it has become an attraction in its own right. The gallery now draws up to 7,000 people a year.
Set in 19 th century farm buildings, the gallery is also Robert's home. It is ideally located for witnessing the wildlife the artist is famed for painting. Many of the paintings hanging on the walls of the gallery are of animals and birds which Robert painted from his kitchen window.
Robert is known for his highly detailed and technically accurate paintings of wildlife. His paintings of British animals and birds have earned him the attention of both the RSPB and the National Trust, whilst his pictures of exotic species have attracted attention from around the world. Original Robert Fuller paintings can fetch up to £13,000.
Alongside original paintings, the gallery exhibits bronze sculptures and limited edition prints by Robert. It also has a wide selection of greetings cards taken from Robert's images.
The gallery is open all year round and holds one major exhibition a year. The last exhibition, held for Christmas 2007, attracted more than 3,000 people.
Each exhibition focuses on Robert's very latest paintings and is usually themed around the artist's forays into the wilderness both at home and abroad. Robert travels every year to photograph and study wildlife in its natural habitat for his paintings.
This year he travelled to Tanzania to photograph wild dogs. Robert hopes to highlight the plight of these endangered animals when he develops his paintings from this visit.
As well as being an artist, Robert is a keen conservationist who raises considerable funds for wildlife charities. The gallery also works hard to promote the artist's commitment to conservation.
During an exhibition gallery organisers will throw open the doors to Robert's studio so that visitors can see how he works. The artist tends to photograph animals and birds in the wild and then paint from these photographs. These photographs are displayed on the walls of the studio alongside descriptions of where and when they were taken.
The 2007 exhibition held an awareness project to raise funds for barn owls. On display next to Robert's paintings were freshly dissected barn owl pellets and skeletons. In the past, the gallery has also hosted falconry displays. |
