When swans inadvertently destroy a little grebe nest, the affronted grebe retaliates via an underwater assault!
Little grebe nests
Little grebes make floating nests out of pond weed. So when the swan and her cygnets begin eating this one's nest, the grebe retaliates by diving beneath and pulling a cygnets leg and pecking at its underbelly! Little grebes are secretive birds, best known for their spectacular diving abilities. They build their nests out of pond weed, which means these structures are continually sinking and must be replenished daily.
This swan cygnets are just weeks old and the pen is teaching them the ropes. But after this underwater assault she moves them to forage to a different part of the lake.
