This is a portrait of a badger cub I rehabilitated here at my home in Yorkshire. It captures the moment this rescued badger took one of its' first peeks at the outside world - one of many short adventures outside before it was ready to be released back into the wild.
Inspired by badgers
Watching this young badger take its very first look at the wild was just magical. One of three rescued cubs I cared for, this little one had been raised in an underground chamber I built to mimic a real sett — a safe space to grow strong before returning to the wild. The way it paused at the entrance, just peering out at the world beyond before retreating to safety, was a moment I’ll never forget… and one I just had to paint.

I lost my Badger friend last month, I had known him since he was a cub he and his friends came for supper every evening. Friends still do. It was sad watching him grow old but he let me lift him to take him to the vet and is now buried in the garden. Wonderful creatures.
