Un à un, les faucons crécerelles d’Apollo et Athena quittent le nid, mais ils ne s’éloignent pas de l’œil vigilant d’Athena.
Premiers vols prudents
Les quatre petits des faucons crécerelles Apollo et Athena ont quitté le nid à un peu plus d’un mois. Mais le plus jeune s’est montré un peu prudent et a passé deux jours à battre des ailes pour se préparer à son envol.
Les premiers jours, ces jeunes ne s’aventurent pas bien loin : ils restent dans les branches à proximité afin que leurs parents puissent les nourrir et reviennent la plupart des soirs pour passer la nuit blottis les uns contre les autres. En passant la nuit à Ash Hollow, maman Athena peut garder un œil vigilant sur sa nichée.

Shocked to find a fledgeling kestrel drowned in a cattle drinking trough, quite close to the Barn Owl box they have used this year. This raises the question of hawks drinking water and that they need shallow provision – not deeper tanks. There are water sources on the farm, including ponds, but freshly fledged birds will not know of them. We now put out shallow trays (upturned dustbin lids) of water for the birds, and cannot rely on natural provision for freshly fledged hawks. Water troughs will now have a plank of wood floated in them for birds to land on and access safely the water.
