Film | Barn Swallows First Flights | Discover Wildlife

Watch as one by one all five barn swallows take their first flights!

First flights

It's been absolutely amazing to watch the swallow chicks fledge! Each swallow flew the short distance (roughly two metres) from the nest to a chain I put up for them.

Shaky landings

Enjoy their first wobbly landings - one lands on top of another and struggles to get a footing whilst as the final fledge approaches, its siblings assume it's bringing food and open their yellow beaks wide. The first swallow fledged at around 9am on August 6th and then four others followed shortly afterwards. The last swallow didn't fledge until shortly after 2pm.
