Gylfie & Dryer have had 2 barn owl chicks this year and they're 9 days apart, so there is quite a size difference. Get a close up view of the chicks when mum Gylfie gets up to stand by her mate Dryer.
Barn owls Gylfie & Dryer
Gylfie has lived at Fotherdale for eight years, with Dryer as her partner for the last two. Together they have raised eight chicks and Dryer has proved to be a devoted owl dad. Their favourite nest box is Elm and in 2026 they laid four eggs here. So far only two of the eggs have hatched, and the eldest chick is already two weeks old. It's sibling is nine days younger so there's already a noticeable size difference between them. As they grow they need brooding less and less and we can look at them more closely. Barn owl chicks at this age only have a small amount of white down so you can see their pink skin, but their eyes are open and they are gaining neck strength. Watch out for the cute yawn when the eldest gets tired.
