Film | The Moment A Little Owl Chick Hatches | Discover Wildlife | Robert E Fuller

Watch the moment a little owl chick hatches from its egg. Filmed in incredible detail and close enough to see its wet feathers, watch the chick unfurl from the coiled position in held inside the egg and use its legs to move.

Little owl species

Little owls are the UK's smallest owls. An adult measures just 20cm when standing and the chicks weigh just 10g - they really are tiny balls of fluff! Not strictly a native species, these owls were introduced here in the 19th century. Little owl nest This is a bespoke nest, made especially to attract little owls and fitted with a camera so that I can follow their day-to-day lives.

Little owl chicks

This female has three chicks. Watch her return to the nest after the third hatches and instantly tidy up, removing the egg shell to keep the nest clean, then returns to brood her three young owlets.
