Film | Barn Owl Has Just One Chick | Gylfie & Dryer

Just one of Gylfie the barn owl's chick has hatched. Watch this to see the precious baby owl cracks out of its egg and gets its first meals.

Already, this only barn owl chick is centre of attention. Watch as barn owl dad Dryer arrives with a shrew and Gylflie carefully breaks this up for her youngster. Having all the food to itself means its doing well - notice how it is already able to find Gyflie in the nest and tuck back under her wings!

Barn owl family

Barn owl pair Gylfie & Dryer are now in their third breeding year but unusually Gylfie laid just two eggs instead of a more typical clutch of between three to five. The reasons for this could be to do with the weather: this spring was particularly dry, leaving the grass scorched and affecting vole population. However, Gylfie is now around eight years old and as a rule birds are less productive as they age.
