Film | Kestrels Welcome Their First Chick | Apollo & Athena |

Kestrels Apollo & Athena's chicks are hatching. Watch them welcome their first chick - Apollo even broods the newly-hatched chick to keep it warm whilst Athena takes a break.

Kestrel chicks hatching

Kestrels Apollo & Athena have a clutch of six eggs. The first chick hatched on May 3rd. Watch as Athena removes, then eats the eggshell. This will help restore important nutrients as she continues to brood.  Whilst male kestrels don't tend to brood chicks, especially once the brood gets larger, it's not uncommon for them to briefly brood at this stage.
