Tawny owls Luna & Bomber welcomed three healthy chicks this week. But as they settle down to a new routine of feeding and brooding, a dark shadow hangs over this nest - a pair of jackdaws are bringing sticks to the entrance, signs they want to build their own nest here..
Luna & Bomber
This tawny owl pair are experienced parents, they've raised five of their own and fostered countless others. They've had their share of losses too, and sometimes Luna's eggs have failed to hatch. So it is wonderful to see all three of chicks hatch out successfully this year.
Jackdaw threat
But danger is never far away. A pair of jackdaws keep piling sticks into the entrance. If they continue they could block this new owl mum and her chicks inside. Thankfully, both Bomber & Luna can still get in and out of the nest for now. But I will need to keep a close eye on the cameras in case it gets any worse.
Excellent owl parents
In the meantime this owl pair are busy caring for their chicks. Dad Bomber is delivering regular meals and Luna sits tight on the chicks. So tight, even Bomber is not allowed near. His job is to deliver the food and leave. Luna is so protective and keeps the chicks so hidden is hard to get a glimpse of the chicks and only when she leaves the nest for a quick break, do we see the first two chicks. First meals But after the third chick hatches we get a beautiful view of Luna feeding all three. I can't wait to all three tawny owl chicks develop.
